Aspley State High School has a proud tradition in the Arts, Sport and Hospitality. Arts & musicWe conduct a school musical every 2nd year and enter participants in the XLD performance and Creative Generations on Stage. Each year we host the Queensland Youth Music Association Competition for instrumental music. Our very talented Concert Band is an annual participant in this competition. Our bands practice on a Tuesday and in 2007 we introduced a Strings Program to the school curriculum. Our Middle School program promotes a Drumming Troupe that showcases our commitment to multi-cultural awareness. Students also have the opportunity to particpate in the Brisbane Eisteddfod, Gold Coast Eisteddfod, Danced in the Spotlight and other school functions as part of the schools Dance Troupe. The program aims to increase students’ dance skills, performance skills and confidence. The quality of this program is evidenced by our continued successes in the competitions we enter through-out the year. DebatingOur school continues its proud tradition of being the most successful debating public school in Queensland. In 2007, we reached the finals of this prestigious tournament. After being the last public school standing in 2005 and 2006, we are confident that this year we will pass through the state semi-finals and reach the grand final. SportAspley is a fierce competitor on the sporting field. Despite our size, we produce competitive and winning teams in the full range of sports we offer our students. Our swimming and athletic carnivals also match any school in Queensland. Our Year 8 students participate in an Interschool Sports Competition every Tuesday afternoon against our local High Schools. Our Year 9 students will compete within an inter-house competition to foster school spirit. On Wednesday afternoon, our Years 10, 11 and 12 play in our District Sports Competition. Aspley SHS also enjoys a partnership with The Aspley Leagues Club. In exchange for the use of our grounds for training purposes after school and during holidays, the club has provided our school with a modern, fully equipped gymnasium, floodlit ovals, oval maintenance and hall refurbishment. HospitalityOur Certificate 2 & 3 Hospitality students each year participate in the Chefs of the Future competition. In 2007, our students took home a prestigious gold medal for the third straight year. ScienceOur science students also have opportunity of participating in University of Queensland’s Science and Engineering Challenge. 2007 again saw our Science students take out sectional titles in the event. |
