Code: ENG003 The main objective of this unit will be to develop students' ability to express their views on a variety of issues that impact on society. Students will be asked to critically evaluate a range of texts and will be given the freedom to choose topics that suit their interests. Students will be expected to create drafts and use the writing process to develop and polish their work. Units will be 4/5 weeks in length and are based on the English Years 1-10 Syllabus. ENG 003 is the third in a range of units of work. It involves the study of fiction, film, and visual texts. The particular focus of this unit will be giving students the opportunity to express their views on a variety of issues that impact on society. TopicsStudents will study such topics as film reviews, novels, themes, characterisation, plot structure, brochures, opinionative speech techniques, techniques of effective public speaking. Assessment
Written pieces will be 300-500 words. Oral pieces 2-3 minutes At completion students should know* The generic conventions and purpose of film reviews. * The generic conventions of novels and analytical essay. *The generic conventions of brochures. * The generic conventions of Opinionative speech and effective public speaking techniques.
At completion students should be able to* Analyse a film and compose a film review. * Analyse a novel's themes and characters in an analytical essay. *Construct a brochure. * Express an informed opinion at length. Literacy elementsStudents will participate in a range of activities which promote literacy. Specifically though, they will: * View a film. * Read a novel, examples of film reviews, brochures and opinionative writing. * Write an analytical essay, an opinionative speech. *Listen to and speak their opinionative speeches. * Shape and Write text for brochures. Integrated technology Technology will be accessed throughout the course through such activities as word processing. However, more specifically, students will have technology integrated into the Brochure unit as this requires students to access programs such as Word or Publisher and the internet. ResourcesStudents will use examples of film reviews, brochures and opinionative speeches.
