Title: The Power of One

Coordinator: Mr Bruce Chadwick and Mr Michael Sparkes

HUMS and AIMS in Year 8 is comprised of four multi-disciplinary units which address the eight Key Learning Areas. The Power of One explores the issues relating to the impact and significance of the individual in our world.

HUMS

The Power of One in HUMS explores the individual, and the impact and significance of the individual in our world.

Areas of investigation include:

  • Who am I and what makes me unique?
  • Where do I live and where do I come from?
  • Finding out about the past.
  • Heroes - what makes a hero? Who are our heroes?
  • Introduction to "Community of Inquiry" - philosophy in schools.
  • What do texts tell me about the achievements and lives of others?
  • How can I share and communicate ideas about me and others?
  • How can I use texts about me to influence others and know more about myself?

 

AIMS

This unit expores the fundamental aspects of Mathematics and Science and links them together through problem solving and application. Students will undertake theoretical and concrete activities to expore a range of concepts related to measurement, laboratory techniques, chance and data, number and reproduction.

By the end of this unit students will be able to:

  • Work safely in a laboratory.
  • Identify tools for measurement and their application.
  • Collect, organise, display and interpret data.
  • Utilise ICT's for the organisation and display of data.
  • Understand the various concepts relating to whole numbers.
  • Understand the concepts of cell growth and reproduction (asexual).
  • Recognise the contribution of diet in maintaining a healthy body.
