Welcome to Middle School.

Students in Year 8 and Semester 1 Year 9 are in the Middle School at Aspley SHS. Our approach to teaching and learning with these students is very much a student-centred one. In our Middle School we have a deep commitment to:
  • Smaller classes (In 2009 our average class size in Year 8 is 24 students in their form class).
  • A smooth transition from Primary school to High school.
  • Students having less teachers (In 2009, Year 8 students have between 4 or 5 different teachers).
  • Building strong relationships (teacher-student, student-student and teacher-parent).
  • The “Big Brother / Big Sister Program” in the Middle School.
  • A challenging curriculum of Humanities - English & Social Sciences (HUMS) and Applications in Maths and Science (AIMS).
  • A strong pastoral care program that not only operates as a subject on its own, but is woven throughout the middle school curriculum.
  • A strong focus on literacy and numeracy
  • An organised and effective homework program.
  • A wide range of extra-curricula activities.

HUMS and AIMS teachers have the time to explore and enrich the learning activities that interest their classes. Class teachers gain a deep understanding of the characteristics of each of the students in their classes. Extension professional development has been afforded to each Middle School teacher in the areas of student learning.
