Languages Other Than English

Welcome to the Languages Other Than English (LOTE). Languages other than English allow us to communicate across cultures and develop socio-cultural understanding.

Languages prepare students for meaningful, productive lives in a culturally and linguistically diverse world. Students will also learn to relate positively to the richness of human diversity and establish a sense of cultural identity.

Languages are also an important medium of interpersonal relationships and learning about the world. People and communities meet many of their personal, social and cultural needs through language.

Languages are used:

  • to process and refine personal knowledge, experience and thought,
  • to engage in social interaction,
  • to construct meanings about the world within particular cultural contexts,
  • for creative and imaginative purposes.

Languages are learned to talk, read and write about the world and to negotiate our place in it.  This is demonstrated when students use language to engage in activities that develop an understanding of the issues and concepts involved in negotiation and socialisation with peers.
