Expectations: Please refer to Aspley SHS Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students document.

Smoking policy

No person may smoke on Government property including students. Aspley SHS exercises a zero tolerance to smoking. A student found smoking at school will receive:

  • 3-day suspension for first offence
  • 5-day suspension for second offence
  • 5-day suspension for third offence.

Year 11 and 12 students will be asked to show cause why their Enrolment is not terminated if suspended for a third Smoking offence. All students will be asked for a commitment to quit smoking through programs with our School Nurse or Government Quit Programs before continuing their enrolment.

This policy applies to our students moving to and from our school while in our uniform or assembled at our transport stops. (Bus and Train)

Students found with cigarettes and lighters/matches will have these items confiscated immediately.

Students found in the school ground with smokers will also receive the same punishment. Smokers often use other students to keep watch while smoking. These students make a conscience decision to support the breaking of this critical rule. Therefore, they can also expect the same consequence. Non-smokers are encouraged to walk away.

Alcohol policy

Students found with alcohol in their possession will be suspended from school.

Illegal drugs policy

Students found in possession, using or dealing in illegal drugs will be immediately recommended for exclusion from Aspley SHS. The School community supports a zero tolerance to these illegal substances around our students.

The school Administration will report all cases to the Police.

Physical assault policy

Physical assault is an illegal act. Students assaulted may make a formal complaint to the police. Unless an extenuating excuse is presented to this school (usually self-defence) students engaging in physical violence will be suspended from school. Self defence is only relevant when no other strategy was available to self protect from an aggressor. Students who assist in a fight by not allowing a student to walk away will also suffer a similar consequence.

This includes coming to and from school while in our uniform and at our transport assembly points. (Bus and Train stops)

Harassment or bullying policy

Harassment is any action that makes another person feel uncomfortable. Harassment can be detrimental to a student’s learning and often leads to a student withdrawing from school.

The most effective strategy to stop bullying is through controlled Mediation. Mediation is the process when both sides are brought together with a controlling third party to discuss future strategies that will stop the harassment.

If a student agrees to stop harassment behaviours but then chooses to continue that behaviour, the school may decide to suspend the student’s enrolment until he/she agrees to abide by the commitment.

Staff, parents and students are all encouraged to report harassment to a School Administrator, Guidance Officer, School Nurse, Head of Department and/or the relevant Year Level Co-ordinator or teacher for immediate intervention.

Cyber bullying occurs when students harass others using mobile phones, text messages, emails or MSN messaging. Students engaging in the practice during school hours can be suspended from school. Re-entry will depend on students agreeing to cease this practice.
