Title: Legal Studies
Pre-requisites:Achieving at a Sound Level in Legal Studies will require an ability to read and critically respond to sophisticated text. Students should be fairly confident in skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing before taking Legal Studies. A commitment to homework and home study are necessary for the student who expects to achieve at sound level or above.

Laws affect every member of society. Members of society need to be aware of the importance of the law and the impact they have on our daily lives. It is hoped that through this course of study students will be able to recognise certain situations arising in the course of their everyday lives which may have legal implications that affect their rights and obligations as community members.

Assessment

Assessment involves a combination of written and oral responses. Each semester includes an essay, short answer test and either a research assignment or report. Semester 2 and 4 require seminar presentations.

Other forms of assessment will include short response / multiple-choice type tests, essay responses, practical exercises and an option for oral/visual media work.

Aims

At the conclusion of this course, students should have developed:

  • the ability to recognise common situations that have legal implications
  • an awareness of their legal rights and responsibilities and a knowledge of when and where to seek legal advice
  • an understanding of how the structure and process of the legal system operates, so that they may be informed and responsible members of the community in which they live
  • strategies that enable them to use rational and objective methods rather than emotional and subjective judgements when examining legal issues
  • an understanding of the legal implications of controversial social issues through classroom and community-based learning experiences
