Title: All the World's a Stage
Pre-requisites: ENG001

The main objective of this unit will be to develop students ability to write and shape, particularly in the imaginative genres. Students will also be given the opportunity to develop their reading and speaking skills through a play performance and  non-fiction.

Students will be expected to create drafts and use the writing process to develop and polish their work. ENG002 is the second in a range of units of work which involve the study of fiction, non-fiction, drama and visual texts. Units will be 4/5 weeks in length and are based on the 2005 Years 1-10 Syllabus.

 

Topics and Assessment

Written pieces will be 300-500 words. Oral pieces 2-3 minutes.

At completion students should know

* the generic conventions of biographical writing

* generic conventions of magazines including cover pages, feature articles, advertisements

* the importance of establishing the target audience for magazines and advertising.

* the generic conventions of short stories

At completion students should be able to

* compose a biography of someone in their local community.

* construct a mini-magazine incorporating a feature article and advertisements.

* interview the subject of their biography and interview other students in role.

* perform an extract of a script to entertain others, applying performance elements such as eye contact, volume, costume and body language.

Literacy elements

Students will enhance their literacy through a range of activities and modes.  Specifically, they will:

* Read biographies, short stories, poems, magazines and drama scripts.

* Write their own biography, magazine (articles) and interview script.

* View dramatic performances and interviews.

*Shape their own dramatic performances and interviews in role.

Integrated technology

Technology is specifically integrated into the Magazine Unit.  Students will need to display word processing skills and to apply technology in order to ensure their magazine is presented professionally.

Resources

Students will read samples of biographical writing, magazines and short stories.  The selection of these will depend on the needs and range of abilities that the teacher identifies within their classroom.  Class sets for the Drama unit are available.  Titles for teachers to choose from are:
