Title: On the Move

Pre-requisites: HEC 001 is recommended but not essential
Outcome levels: Level 5
Coordinator: Carolyne Foely

This unit of work will focus on designing and producing products for both foods and textiles for teenagers on the move.

  • Investigate the nutritional requirements for active teenagers.
  • Produce food items that are suitable for active teenagers.
  • Explore woven versus knitted fabrics
  • Produce a garment from knitted fabric.

 

Assessment

Practical demonstration

For term 1 students will complete practical cookery each week. A production squences will be required each week in practical cookery. Assessment will take the form of a "Design Challenge" where students will be asked to Investigate, design, make and appraise a product that will meet this challenge.

For term 2 students will design and construct a Hoddie. This work will be also include a design folio. Both Folio and practicle garment will be assessed.

A class test

Completed at the end of the semester. This test consists of short answers.

At completion students should know

  • The relationship between production procedures and the quality of the products
  • How to judge processes and products and how they meet the individual needs

  • How the characteristics of a fabric and elements of foods affects their performance

  • Effective use of the Internet, media, DVD’s and VCR’s to access and analyse information and trends

Resources

1x A4 2D Ring binder and reinforced refill paper OR 1 x A4 Excercise book (160 page)

Text - “Resources for Living” Waddell and Day to Day Cookery. These books are provided under the textbook hire scheme.

Students will be required to provide the ingredients and fabric, plus other requirements for the construction of their products. . Extra detail regarding these requirements for all practical work will be explained in class. Participation in practical work is essential.
