Title: The Aspleyville Horror
Coordinator: Mr Bruce Chadwick and Mr Michael Sparkes

The Aspleyville Horror; explores some of the major environmental issues confronting our world through a study of the problems encountered in a small seaside town undergoing enormous change.

HUMS

The small town of Aspleyville is at the crossroads. Faced with a rapidly and increasing population and the demand for water, power and improved facilities, the citizens of Aspleyville must make drastic decisions about its future.

Should a proposed new dam be constructed?

Should recycling be dumped?

Should a nuclear power plant be located in downtown Aspleyville?

Areas of investigation include:

  • Environmental impact of human activity
  • Is our environment worth preserving?
  • Thinking globally and acting locally
  • Individual ecological footprints
  • Sustainability
  • Local government
  • How can I express my opinion about the environment in society?
  • Who shares and communicates ideas about the environment?
  • How do I want others to feel about the environment and how can I shape and influence that?

AIMS

This unit explores the mathematical and science related concepts in the fields of Enerhy, Ecosystems and Electricity. It underpins these concepts through the development of mathematical problem-solving skills based in common and decimal fractions, percentage, measurement and algebra. Science related topics will apply these skills through application to field studies and analysis of real data.

By the end of this unit students will be able to:

  • Conduct operations in common and decimal fractions.
  • Use percentages to relate reallife data related to energy efficiency.
  • Use measures of central tendency to generate conclusions and propose future actions with respect to local ecosystems.
  • Use algebra in the explanation and application of population studies.
  • Investigate alternative energies specifically looking at the use of electricity in the school.
