Title: My Country, My Home
Coordinator: Mr Bruce Chadwick and Mr Michael Sparkes

My Country, My Home attempts to answer the question, what makes Australia unique?

HUMS

Areas to be investigated:

  • What does it mean to be Australian?
  • Indigenous Australia
  • Colonial Australia
  • Australian icons and their appeal
  • Who are our greatest Australians?
  • Australian government
  • What texts tell me about Australia.
  • How can I share and communicate my knowledge, opinions and feelings about Australia?
  • How can I use texts about Australia to influence other in what they know and feel about Australia?
  • How do authors construct a sense of uniqueness about Australia?

AIMS

This unit explores the concepts of time, space, algebra and number, unifying them in the study of Australia's unique geographical features and contribution to the quest for interstellar travel. Students will investigate the processes that shape the Earth, the mathematical relationships that support these developments and the natural geometric formations within these structures. The application of Newtons Laws and the investigation of speed, velocity and acceleration will tie together the concepts on kinematics and algebra.

By the end of the unit students will be able to:

  • Explain the concept of time from the millisecond to megayears.
  • Look at the rate of change of the Earth's features with respect to time.
  • Investigate long term change v's catastrophic change.
  • Explain the rock cycle.
  • Look at the mathematical application of hardness, density and cleavage.
  • Investigate speed, velocity and acceleration.
  • Solve equations using basic algebra.
  • Apply Newtons Laws to the concepts of basic rocketry.
  • Investigate the Scram Jet as an Aussie invention.
Assessment
  • In-class test - middle Term 4
  • Take home assignment - end of Term 4
  • Folio/student class work - progressive
