Code: CHM111, CHM112
Title: Chemistry
Coordinator: Mr Michael Sparks

The study of Chemistry engages students in an exciting and dynamic investigation of the material universe. Chemistry helps us understand the links between the macroscopic properties of the world, and the subatomic particles and forces that account for those properties.

Undertaking a study of Chemistry will immerse stuents in both the practical and and contextual aspects of the discipline through working scientifically and enacting scientific enquiries, investigations and experiments. It will encourage students to think creatively and rationally, to understand and to act rsponsibly on Chemistry related problems and issues and to communicate effectively in a range of modes.

Topics

  • Introduction to Chemistry
  • Acids and Bases
  • Water - properties including solvency, water quality
  • Camping & Leisure - metals, oxidation and reduction
Assessment
  • Task 1 (SA) - late Term 1
  • Task 2 (ERT) - late Term 2
  • Task 3 (SA) - end Term 3
  • Task 4 (EEI) - end Term 4

The Chemistry program identifies three different areas for assessment. Each category contributes equally to the overall grade. The categories are:

  • Extended response (ER)
  • Supervised Assessment (SA)
  • Extended experimental investigation.(EEI)
Aims
