The Education & Training Reforms for the Future (ETRF) Healthy Futures Project takes aims to establish a relationship between employers in the health and aged care industries and schools, to develop formal structured pathways for students into a range of industry specific vocations. The project takes into account local and national trends in the Health and Aged Care industries, which point to an increasing demand for services from an ageing population, compounded by an ageing industry workforce. It is hoped that students become aware of the enormous range of opportunities the industry offers. Not only will it help inform them in relation to subject selection and tertiary course choices, but it may also open the door to a range of future employment options, via appropriate qualifications undertaken during the program. Expressions of InterestInformation about this project is available from Ms Cuddihy in the HOD Senior Schooling office. Interested Year 10 students will apply for specific structured workplace learning in one of the host facilities including the Masonic Care in Sandgate, Prince Charles Hospital, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and the Holy Spirit Home in Chermside. Possible industry experiences include nursing, carer, business administration, welfare services, pharmacy, physiotherapy, laundry, domestic work, hospitality, wards person, engineering or general maintenance. Commencing in January of Year 11, successful applicants will begin their one-semester placement, one day per fortnight, also undertaking Certificate III Aged Care, or other appropriate certificate, through Brisbane North Institute of TAFE in alternate weeks. On completion of this first semester, student options include securing a School-based apprenticeship or Traineeship, gaining part-time employment, continuing with the placement, completing the Certificate III qualification, or exiting the program with a statement of attainment.
