Title: The Building Blocks
Pre-requisites: None
Coordinator: Ms Sue Lonsdale Dance allows us to understand our own culture, other cultures and the world at large. This introductory Dance unit will allow students to get to know each other and learn to feel comfortable working independently and in groups. Once this process has been initiated, the students will be introduced to the Elements of Dance: Space, Time and Effort. Topics- Identify and manipulate the elements and principles of dance
- Construct short movement sequences
- Experiment with various rhythms
- Move to different pieces of music and sounds
- Learn performance techniques - skills/expression
- Look at various dance styles
AssessmentStudents will complete three major pieces of assessment over the semester: - A Performance task - adapted repertoire: End Term 1Download
- An Appreciation task - critical reflection of work: Download
- A Choreographic task - movement/dance piece: Download
At completion students should know- Thre three organisers of dance
- How to be healthy - nutrition and exercise
- Elemetns of dance to be used in choreography
- Costuming, stage setting, audio elements and lighting for dance
At completion students should be able to- Create short movement sequences
- Learn and perform short sequences in front of class members
- Complete journal work
- Analyse dance works and writing short essays
- Express a point of view with justification
- Interpreting the theme / intent of dance works
- Work individually and as a team member
Literacy elements- Use of ICT's in research and class work
- Communication skills - how to analyse a dance work, expressing opinions, grammar/sentence construction
- Use of a range of learning sources
- Modified curriculum for students in need of extension or special consideration

Assignment guidelinesPlease refer to the Assignment Guidelines on how to set out bibliographies and references. Resources- 1 x A4 Visual Diary, 1 x Document wallet
- Students must wear appropriate Dance wear for all practical lessons and assessment.
