Who are Australia’s highest paid performing musicians? You won’t find them in the top 40 but around the world you can hear children screaming their names – Jeff, Murray, Anthony and Sam. In this unit you will look at how music is used in early childhood as a tool to both educate and entertain culminating in a real life performance before a 5 year old audience. This unit is a must for anyone intending to work with young children in the future.

  • Basic composition/songwriting skills
  • How to use musical language to entertain and educate
  • The role of music in early childhood education
  • Basic performance skills using keyboard and voice
Assessment

Students will complete three major pieces of assessment:

  • Composition – Childrens song/nursery rhyme (Mid Term 2) DOWNLOAD
  • Performance – Early Childhood segment (ala Wiggles/Hi 5) (End Term 2)
  • Written Exam

 At completion students should know

  • How to work as part of an ensemble to devise, rehearse and perform a short musical play for children
  • Basic harmonic principles
  • Analyse and interpret a peice of music
At completion students should be able to
  • Perform as part of an early childhood group of entertainers
  • Write their own simple songs for children
  • Use a musical vocabulary to analyse and discuss musical elements in an early childhood entertainment session
Literacy elements
  • Development of subject specific vocabulary
  • Emphasis on literacy education for early childhood
  • Use of rhyme, meter and phrasing in written and spoken language
  • Syllable dissection of words
Integrated technology
  • Word processing for research and analysis tasks
  • Use of Sibelius 4 for publishing printed music
  • Use of internet to research and locate source material

Resources

Pencil and eraser, 1 x manilla folder, 1 x music exercise book (96 page which contains both lines for writing and also manuscript), 1 x black fine point pen.
