Title: Home & Away
Pre-requisites: Students should be familiar with at least one of: guitar,bass guitar, drums, keyboard or another instrument

Should you let somebody touch your Bouzouki?  Where would you find a Djembe? Would you like to be a Griot?  And just where is the penniless sitar player’s humble abode?  The answers to all these questions can be found in this unit.  Home  Away takes you on a guided tour of the music and culture of countries around the world as well as close to Australia.  Students will gain a first-hand experience of the rich variety of sounds and styles that are used around the globe broadening their horizons while looking at music from Africa, India, The Caribbean and Asia.

Topics
  • Performance skills in a wide variety of musical genres
  • Techniques of composition and music notation used throughout the world.
  • Differences and similarities between musical cultures of Asia, India, South America and Africa
  • The links between traditional tribal musical elements and contemporary music styles
Assessment

Students will complete four major pieces of assessment:

  • Research Task – (Late Term 3)
  • Composition Task – (Mid Term 4)
  • Performance of composition (Late Term 4)
  • Written Exam – (Late Term 4)

Smaller performance tasks will be assessed throughout the semester.

At completion students should know
  • how to work as part of an ensemble to devise, rehearse and perform a piece of music appropriate for use in a non-western theatre work e.g. Kabuki
  • musical principles and techniques used in non-western cultures
  • sufficient musical vocabulary to interpret, discuss and write about examples on non-western music 
At completion students should be able to
  • complse music using non-western techniques and principles
  • perform a piece of non-western music
  • discuss and write about examples on non-western music
Literacy elements
  • development of subject specific vocabulary
  • use of a variety of adaptable language resources for varying levels of literacy
  • analytical writing skills
Integrated technology
  • word processing and internet use in research task
  • Sibelius 4 software for composing and publishing music

Pencil and eraser, 1 x manilla folder, 1 x music exercise book (96 page which contains both lines for writing and also manuscript), 1 x black fine point pen
