Who is deciding what you listen to? In this unit you will investigate the popular music industry, explore different musical styles which are currently in vogue and develop skills in song writing, performance and analysis in these styles. Topics- Learn songwriting skills
- Research and prepare a presentation on their favourite musical style
- Investigate career positions within the recording industry
- Develop performance skills in voice, guitar and keyboard
AssessmentStudents will complete the following pieces of assessment: - Research Assignment DOWNLOAD
- Album Review Task
- Composition (setting lyrics to music) (End term 4)
- Performance (two to be selected from voice, keyboard and guitar) (End Term 3, Beginning Term 4, Mid Term 4)

At completion students should know - How to write lyrics appropriate to particular genres of popular music and set them to music displaying genres specific characteristics

- How to practise, rehearse and perform in a professional manner
At completion students should be able to- Compose an original song demonstrating genre specific musical characteristics, including lyrics
- Perform popular music both individually and in groups using both voice and instrument
- Discuss and write about popular music using appropriate musical vocabulary
